Virtuoso con misura, è questa la cifra stilistica di Pierluigi Balducci. Giunto alla sesta produzione a proprio nome, il bassista mette in evidenza impeccabile tecnica e gusto armonico che si concretizza in frasi dalla cantabilità mai banale. L’organico qui impegnato, al di là dell’elevata caratura che rende superflua ogni presentazione, si rivela perfettamente in sintonia con le scelte del leader, determinando la felice riuscita del progetto. Sia le ance di Paul McCandless che il piano di John Taylor sono infatti intrisi di elegante classicità, ed il loro apporto appare particolarmente ispirato e determinante fin dalla breve e lirica Introduction, che con la sinuosità della sua linea melodica introduce l’ingresso del quartetto nella movimentata The Light of Seville, dove gli eccellenti solo sono ben sostenuti dal lavoro percussivo di Michele Rabbia, che nel contesto mostra grande duttilità, adattando e contenendo il suo ben noto estro creativo.
Il repertorio va ascritto quasi interamente a Balducci, con due eccezioni: Our Spanish Love song, dove il suo tocco richiama alla mente un altro eccellente bassista italiano specializzato nello strumento elettrico, Marco Siniscalco, e Unrequited, con le quattro corde ancora sotto l’occhio di bue nella fase centrale, e il soprano di McCandless che va a concludere perentorio il discorso.
Saggiamente parco anche nella durata totale (di stampo vinilico, affinchè ci si congedi non ancora sazi…), il disco riserva nella parte finale momenti assai incisivi, con la sezione ritmica che svolge il ruolo di primo piano in The Sky over Skye, mentre a seguire è John Taylor a mettersi in luce col suo fraseggio cristallino nella toccante L’equilibrista (a Ernst Reijseger), dedica di Balducci ad un altro grande musicista, suo compagno di avventura in passato ne “Il peso delle nuvole”: testimonianza di percorsi forse più angolari prima di giungere all’attuale lido, sereno e pacificato, ma ugualmente significativo e stimolante all’ascolto.

Virtuoso with measure, this is the signature style of Pierluigi Balducci. Now in its sixth production in its own name, the bassist man highlights impeccable technique and harmonious taste that is realized in cantabile phrases, never ordinary. The headcount involved here, beyond the high caliber that dispenses each presentation, is revealed in perfect harmony with the decisions of the leaders, resulting in the successful outcome of the project. Both reeds by Paul McCandless and piano by John Taylor are in fact imbued with elegant classicism, and their contribution is particularly inspired and decisive since the short and lyrical Introduction, which with its sinuous melody line introduces the entrance of the quartet in the eventful The Light of Seville, where the excellent solos are well supported by the drum work by Michele Rabbia, who shows in this context great flexibility, adapting and containing his well-known creative talent. The repertoire should be attributed almost entirely to Balducci, with two exceptions: Our Spanish Love Song, where his touch brings to mind another great Italian bassist specialized in electric instrument, Marco Siniscalco, and Unrequited, with the four strings still in evidence in the middle of the stuff, and the soprano of McCandless that goes to conclude in peremptory way. Wisely brief in total duration (as a vinyl, so that you leave not yet satisfied …), the disc reserves in the final some other punchy moments, with the rhythm section that plays the leading role in The Sky over Skye, and then John Taylor to shine with its crystal clear phrasing in L’equilibrista (a Ernst Reijseger), Balducci’s dedication to another great musician, his companion of adventure in the past in “Il peso delle nuvole“, remembering more angular musical paths before reaching the current shore, serene and peaceful, but equally significant and inspiring.
